A Pretty Bedroom for two Girls

One of my favourite customers who I have known for years invited me over last week to see the end result of us re-doing her two daughters room. The challange here was originally the curtains were quite dark and the room seemed smaller and darker due to this .We chose white beds with low ends to help largen and lighten the room , Complimentary linens from Red Plum and some lovely art work from the very clever Sprout Gallery and Blue paw and One of our signature Rugs plus some new curtains by our in house curtain makerand Volia the rooms is bigger , brighter and Lighter and Oh so pretty ...

I asked Michelle from Sprout Galllery to come up with a pretty art design in pinks and greens to compliment this theme and look what she came up with just Gorgeous isn't it ... She is SSOOOOO Talented

Hi everyone sorry for the very long absence !!!

I am back now after visiting lots of different baby and children's stores in the UK, USA and Canada and found lovely new and fresh companies for all of My First Room loyal customers.

I have loads of stories to tell and new linen ranges coming our way including our own brand which I am excited about .

But first right here in Oz....

I am so excited with what we have right here in Australia. I met with the lovely Emma Gordon of Jacob and Banomi a couple of years ago when she was first starting out she showed me samples and sketeches of her range and I was very impressed my good friends Siobhan from Cocolini and Jess from Kids Interior Designs were also there and we had a fun morning going through ideas with Emma and playing with her gorgeous daughter . I was so thrilled when I saw her new designs of the little traveller doona set and cot linen. We had discussed what a great combination red, navy and gray make and I am sure you will agree it is just stunning !!! Well done Emma !!! Think I will be getting these for my two boys ...

Recently myself and three other ladies as passionate about children’s interiors as myself displayed our products at a private showing during the Melbourne gift fair. I was joined by Sura, owner of Red Plum Linen, Emma owner of Branberry Blankets and Jessica owner of Kids interiors. We all stayed, with the exception of Jess who lives in Melbourne, in a gorgeous 3 bedroom apt in Southbank for 5 nights and had so much fun.

We invited lots of retail shops from across Australia to come and look at the linen, blankets, wall art and rugs which we set up on 2 cots and 6 beds, one of which was a Sunbury Bed which we brought down from Brisbane. We had really positive feedback and had loads of fun and laughs alongside a bit of champagne of an evening. Here are some shots … I hope you like them

So very sorry for my huge absence on my blog. I have been really busy with my new venture, my boys and of course the shop...

I am now the Australian and New Zealand distributor for an International Rug company.
It all started a few years ago when I became really frustrated with the lack of choice in Australia of beautiful children’s rugs. The only ones I could see were quite gaudy and I wanted something unique. So I basically searched the world for beautiful children’s rugs and started importing them exclusively now I am also selling them to other baby and interior shops around Australia.

I am also in the process of designing some patterns with Red Plum Linen to match back with their gorgeous fabrics and it is all very exciting. Here are some of my favourite combinations so far.

For the girls:

The butterfly paisley rug teams perfectly with Red Plum’s confetti pink,
The pink polka dot rug with their candy spot,

candy stripe and the bird tree rugs with their entire girls range really .
The rugs also work with Lullaby Linen as well.

Branberry Blankets

I am so excited!!! We are getting the best blankets in the whole world!!! Branberry Blankets

I think for my boy’s I will get the navy and white check for my youngest and the red and white for my oldest….

Inspiring bed linen

We have recently started to stock the American Luxury Label Dwell Studio bed and cot Linen. What I love about this range, apart from the obvious high quality of the fabric, is the stunning use of colours and their nature inspired themes.
Their garden Blossom range for girls was the first pattern to catch my eye as it is a stunning combination of pale latte, dark chocolate and pinks.

My other girl’s range favourite is the gorgeous Sparrow collection which I think is one I would have if my second baby had been a girl rather than another boy… The sparrow is a mixture of white, lavender, pink and again carries through tones of beige and chocolate.

Birds, trees and Gardens feature strongly in Modern Children’s decorating themes and it is a refreshing change from the usual Pinks with butterflies and flowers.

To complete the picture here and carrying through the nature theme those of you with boys MUST look at the gorgeous Owl Garden range.

This has proven to be our best seller and we had an order of 8 duvet sets arrive on Tuesday and only have 2 left now and it’s only Thursday. It is so so cute and lovely to see a nature inspired theme which carries through into a boy’s room. What I am dying going to set it up with in the shop is the Love Mae Bulid a tree and Forest Critters for boys and twitters for boys. I think they will look stunning together.

Instant room transformation

Wall stickers I think are one of the most fun, simple and easy way to transform your child’s room. What makes them so wonderful is that the fact that you quickly and inexpensively change the whole theme of the room and get your creative juices flowing whilst deciding where to place them. The two brands I sell are both totally reusable and moveable. Perfect for if you are renting or if you do not want to put nails or hooks in your walls. The market seemed to be flooding with ones that all seemed to look the same to me until I came across in my late nights searches the brands Little chipipi moveables and more recently the company Love Mae.

Both are small Australian family run companies who are lovely to deal with. Both are mums who are extremely talented graphic designers who have absolutely amazing designs that actually compliment each other despite them being made with different mediums and textures. My Little Chipipi Favourites are the Gorgeous Red Robin and Butterflies and for the Boys Ships Ahoy and Drive Time.

Love Mae wall stickers which are actually made of fabrics do the most gorgeous build a tree, forest critters and deers alongside some amazing Dinosaurs and Vintage car designs. Both companies also do some lovely alphabet letters too.

So next time you want inspiration and a quick fix of decorating with your child’s help why not revamp their room together. It has kept my 4 year occupied for hours and that alone is worth the money …..

One more thing on PJs...

Well I must say there is nothing better than a good night sleep for mums. I am very very dysfunctional and can get down right nasty if I am woken too many times during the night by my boys. I realised this very early on in my motherhood days and researched ways in which to get that blissful uninterrupted sleep. I found and read in may books on the subject that babies wake mainly if they are hungry or cold.
So first step feed them loads before bed time. Problem solved. Secondly make sure they are warm. I put them in a sleeping bag as it does get very cold in our house at night. At first I was worried about them being too warm but was re-assured by numerous sleeping consultants and Libby the owner of eeni meeni that as the armholes are so generous this would not be the case. You know what it worked!!! Both boys hit the magical 7pm to 7am by the time they were 3 months old .
I first used the sleeping sacks for new borns and then the sleeping cocoons. I honestly believe this is why they both are such good sleepers. When you think about it does make sense if we are cold at night we can pull a blanket over us but toddlers and babies can not so they cry for us to fix the problem.
So if you have a toddler who has never been a good night sleeper this just might be the answer….

More gorgeous kid's PJs

There is nothing nicer at the end of the day after my boys have had their bath and are squeaky clean albeit momentarily to get them dressed in their PJs. They both look like little Angels and their naughty pranks of the day are forgotten as we read their favourite books before they go off to the land of nod. Actually I think I am a PJ addict which is why, I stock so many. My First Room stocks a very exclusive range of boutique and small company PJs and I am always on the look out for beautiful new and unique designs.

Last post I wrote about Huckleberry Lane ’s gorgeous Boys Range. Their Girl’s range is just as beautiful and is extremely popular.

Other labels that we have are beautiful are the gingerlilly children’s range , range and the eeni meeni mini moh range . Eeni Meeni ‘s quality is absolutely superb . My first son demanded to wear the same set practically every night- as a result there were constantly washed and dried after a year we moved on to the next season’s pair and now my second son is wearing that original pair and they are still looking brand new .

Stylish kid's PJs

Well it has been ages since I did my last blog what with running a shop, starting a web site from scratch and bringing up two little boys. I hope you can forgive me. I am under so much pressure from my client's,

web customers, family and friends to get this going again,

so here goes...

As a mum of two boys ages two and four, I really felt there was a huge hole in the market and general lack of boy's gorgeous pyjamas. By that I mean really gorgeous as in cute, stylish, tasteful and practical. All I could find were the garish ones with bold and sometimes tacky trucks or cartoon figures. Naturally there were lots of beautiful girl's pyjamas around but I wanted to find that special something for the boys. I wanted the usual quality that is synonymous with My First Room and, guess what, I found...

Huckleberry Lane

I discovered them in Melbourne at the lovely
Kids in Style fair and did my first initial order. There were so many designs to choose from. They arrived in store for the summer and some of the boy designs sold
out in the first few days!!!
My favourites were the planes and beach huts.

We are now into our fourth season with Huckleberry Lane PJs and they just keep getting better. This season I got a bit carried away and ordered five boys' styles and only two girls' styles. Whoops! The boys range was so cute I just ordered them all. Oh and some exciting news for Huckleberry Lane. They have been invited to sell their beautiful children's pyjamas in Harrods of Knightsbridge. So now the little boys in London can be just as gorgeous in the PJs as their
Aussie counterparts.

Tips to create a stunning nursery and children’s bedroom

Carey the owner of the stunning children’s interiors shop My First Room put together this list of ideas she uses when creating nurseries for her customers.

To inspire a feeling of safety, security and magic your little ones room should be a haven in which they can sleep, dream and play safely. I do not believe in over coordinating or matching everything but prefer a carefully and cleverly chosen ecleptic mixture that tones together. I often have been known to cut up doona covers to give fabric to my lampshade maker, my artist to create a 3D canvas or sewers to line maize baskets. Thankfully now I have sourced fantastic fabrics so I am not cutting up as many doona covers …. Little compliments make all the difference, hemming a mosquito net with a lovely binding or lining a laundry hamper all add to the finishing touch. Start with a fabric you love for your major and largest piece whether it be a cot quilt, blind or upholstered chair. Then pick two to three co-coordinating fabrics that you can use for soft furnishings, wall canvases and linens. It really is all about creating that unique timeless, magical and nurturing haven for both you and your baby to grow, sleep and play together in.

When designing your nursery do not be afraid of mixing colours and moving away from tradition. One of the most stunning nurseries I have created was one where we used grey walls with red, white and grey linen and accessories. If you are not finding out what you are having then beige and white is an excellent starting point. You can add pastel pink or baby blue in accessories later or for a striking look navy or red both look stunning with beige and whites. Another great colour is pale peppermint or sage green whch looks lovely with either pinks , lavenders or navy .

Always start with colours selection first and shy away from overly bright solid colours for walls. What may seem like a good idea at the time may over stimulate your child and then you will never get any sleep … Choose colours and themes that will grow with your child that are not age specific. By investing in quality timeless pieces You can transform the room from a nursery to toddlers to child’s bedroom by simply adding or changing small items rather than having to rip off winni the pooh wall paper borders that no longer suit your 5 year old.

Storage is always an issue with nurseries as most baby items need to be folded rather than hung I personally found shelves and storage maize baskets to be the easiest options. Choose a wardrobe with both shelving , drawers and hanging space or alternatively a chest of drawers with an adjustable change tray on top that can be removed rather than an actual change table which you will only use for a couple of years and do not provide any storage. We recommend the Locally made sunbury adjustable change tray and range of furniture.

Themes are always fun but remember pick timeless, classic ideas that will age with your child. The wiggles may seem fun now but will they want it for ever? Often you can take inspiration from a favourite toy from your own childhood. Some different boys themes are western cowboys , pirates , hot air balloons, airplanes and dinosaurs along with the traditional nautical and transport themes. Girls are moving towards strawberries or lady birds as well as the obvious flowers, fairies and butterflies.

Personalise it. Children love having their names in their rooms. Our artists create individual art work canvases just for your child with their own theme. Small square canvases or timber blocks with their names on in your choice of colours or fabrics are popular too. Personalised linen with their names on can be a wonderful choice as can decoupage letters for the wall or door.

Obviously we need to put safety as the main priority. No matter how beautiful it looks as first time mothers we are sometimes unaware of potential risks to a new baby. Be careful of any linen with bows, buttons or appliqué. Ensure they are securely attached and can never be pulled off by little fingers and put into little mouths. Be careful of placement of mobiles ensuring your child can not reach them and again ensure they are attached securely. Ensure your furniture and window coverings fit the Australian safety regulations. Blinds and curtains should never have a chord with a loop dangling which could endanger the risk of strangling. Never place the cot near curtains that could be pulled over your baby’s face.

Once you have checked your nursery for safety and have made it perfect you can finally relax and enjoy your precious time with your new baby . Take a moment to enjoy this time with them as it passes so quickly !!!!
